About Kerala School Education Department:

The system of school education has to be on the right track catering to the foundational needs of the students in accordance with the changing times. Samagra Shiksha, Kerala has been implementing several programems in order to enhance the quality of the school education. Kerala has achieved a human development index comparable to the developed countries of the World.

These achievements are largely due to high literacy and education for a long time. Kerala has largely addressed the issue of access and retention which is still a major challenge in many parts of the country. Almost all children in the schooling age are reaching school and the retention level is very high. All the activities by the SSK in this year have been undertaken in order to achieve the broader objectives address the existing gaps and bridge the academic lacuna for ensuring age appropriate education as envisaged in the RTE act.

Functions of SCERT:

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT Kerala), is an autonomous body of the Department of General Education; Government of Kerala. It is established on the lines of NCERT at the national level and functions as an apex body in the academic matters of school education from Pre-primary to Higher secondary level. The multifarious functions of the institution ranges from policy formulation, curriculum development, preparation of teaching-learning materials, educational researches, vocationalisation of education etc. to teacher education programmes in the state.

The National Education Policy had highlighted the need for strengthening the academic foundation of school education, by establishing the NCERT at the National level and SCERTs at the State level. The SCERT was established in Kerala in 1994.
